MAHPERD ANNUAL AWARDS AND
NOMINATIONS
MAHPERD recognizes the top professionals in our field each year at the
annual convention. MAHPERD members are encouraged to nominate professionals
who fulfill the requirements. Award winners who have membership in the
American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance will
have their names submitted to the Southern District American Alliance for
Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance for consideration of the
Southern District award. Members selected for a Southern District award
will have their names submitted for consideration of national awards.
You are requested to submit names of MAHPERD members who should be
considered for each award. Names should be sent to Dr. Milton Wilder,
Delta State University, by October 1, 2009. Dr. Wilder’s email address is

Mississippi
Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance
Honor Awards
HONOR AWARD
To recognize an individual's
outstanding contribution to the work and programs
of MAHPERD. This contribution may include
service and leadership which has strengthened the organization and
profession in Mississippi over a period of years.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current
member of MAHPERD for a minimum of 5
years.
2. At least age 30.
3. At least a BA
or BS degree.
4. At least 10 years experience as a teacher,
supervisor, director, coach, or combination in
HPER or dance.
5. Contributions to local, state, and/or
national alliance of HPERD.
PRIDE IN TEACHING AWARD
One person in each of the following areas may
receive an award:
Health
Physical Education
Recreation
Dance
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Full time teacher in Mississippi
and MAHPERD member.
2. Demonstrated leadership and/or
teaching excellence in two or more of the following:
Creative/Innovative
teaching methods.
Teacher/student rapport.
Humanistic teaching methods
Leadership in school or community.
Leadership in state.
A letter of recommendation must accompany nominations for the
candidate from his/her principal,
supervisor, chairperson, or dean.
DANCE EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
An individual who has major responsibility
for teaching dance at any level.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Minimum 3 years teaching
experience.
2. Positive role model in personal health and fitness, and sensitive to
student needs.
3. Teaches creatively.
4. Presents a balanced curriculum, based on developmental, social and
psychological needs of students.
5. Assumes responsibility for
own professional growth through membership and involvement in local, state,
and national dance education organizations.
HEALTH EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
Individual who has major responsibility for
teaching health education.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Health education teacher with a minimum of
3 years experience.
2. Positive role model in health, fitness,
and sensitivity to student needs.
3. Uses various teaching methods and
innovative learning plans.
4. Conducts balanced and sequential
curriculum.
5. Shows responsibility for own professional
growth.
6. Evidences commitment through membership
and involvement in local, state, and national health organizations.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATOR OF THE
YEAR
An individual who has major responsibility
for teaching physical education in grades K.-6.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Minimum
of 6 years teaching experience.
2. Positive role model.
3. Uses various teaching methods and plans
innovative learning experiences.
4. Conducts a balanced and sequential
curriculum for students.
5. Assumes responsibility for own
professional growth.
6. Shows commitment to education profession by serving
on state, regional, or national committees and/or
by presenting workshops at these levels.
SECONDARY PHYSICAL EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
An individual who has major responsibility
for teaching physical education in grades 7-12.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be a secondary school
P.E. teacher with a minimum of 3 years
teaching experience.
2. Positive role model.
3. Uses various teaching methods and plans
innovative learning experiences.
4. Conducts a balanced and sequential
curriculum for students.
5. Assumes responsibility for own
professional growth.
6. Shows commitment to profession through membership and
involvement in state, regional, or national physical education
organizations.
STUDENT
SCHOLASHIP AWARD
Given to outstanding undergraduate majoring
in HPERD Student may be going into the
sophomore, junior, or senior year.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Present
member of MAHPERD.
2. Maintains overall
GPA of 2.5 or higher.
3. Serves in leadership roles on campus.
RULES FOR ELIGIBILITY
1. Student
writes a letter requesting selection to his/her
advisor. Include short biographical information, reasons for choosing major,
and career goals.
2. Student asks 2 faculty members to write
letters of support.
3. Major advisor sends student's letter and
supporting letters to chairman of Honor awards Committee.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
A person in another
profession, who has made an outstanding contribution through the work of the
alliance, or related fields, may be presented this award through unanimous
vote of the committee. Please write a letter of justification for your
nomination.
TAYLOR
DODSON AWARD - NOMINEE
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.
Be a current member of MAHPERD and a member of
AAHPERD for at least 5 consecutive years
prior to being nominated for the award and live in the southern district at
the time of the award.
2. Be less than 40 years old as of January 1,
2001
3. Be a contributor within the
HPERD fields or to the profession through
allied fields.
4. Be of high moral character
whose contributions have most fully expressed the spirit of service which
the award represents.
5. Have gained prominence
through some of the following: excellence in teaching, outstanding
administrative
achievement, significant contributions in research; leadership in
professional organizations including state and
national contributions in professional literature or outstanding community
service.
